Have your say on proposed mobile business trading areas

The public have the opportunity from today, Monday, 15
May until Thursday, 15 June 2023 to comment on the 69 proposed mobile business
trading areas in Cape Town. This is a key step as part of the process to allow
for permits to be issued to mobile businesses like food trucks and services
offered from trailers.
The City of Cape Town is constantly looking and investing in ways to help support various business sectors. A recent example is the development of the draft Mobile Business Policy coupled with proposed amendments to the related Informal Trading By-law and providing proposed mobile business trading areas to help the growing mobile business sector.
During the public participation process that started today, interested stakeholders can view the 69 sites currently proposed for mobile business trading areas on the City's website, on the Have Your Say page. This includes proposals for the number of bays available per site, the locations, and the general terms and conditions when operating.
'With mobile businesses like food trucks, barber shops and clothing shops growing in popularity, the City wants to make it easier for businesses to operate in this sector. For this reason, last year, the City set off on a journey to draft its first Mobile Business Policy. The policy was advertised and was open for public comment,' said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.
Now that a policy has been drafted, the next steps include a by-law to activate mobile business permitting. Proposed mobile business trading areas are also needed for the mobile businesses to operate.

Way forward
- The proposed mobile business trading areas are out for comment (as mentioned above.)
- The public participation process for the proposed amendments to the Informal Trading By-law will start in due course.
- Once these two processes have been completed, they will be tabled with the draft Mobile Business Policy at the Portfolio Committee; Mayoral Committee meeting and Council for consideration and approval.
